I learned how to design my own research projects, find information quickly, summarize the results and present them in a variety of formats suitable for different audiences.
As a PhD student in East Asian history I learned quickly that there is no straightforward path to the answers of the research questions I formulated. I quickly learned to anticipate that I need to verify information by contrasting information between sources, take into account the background of the authors/creators, and sometimes simply do not have an answer for my question, or even that my question needs adjusting. I also found out that the answers often surprise, and more often lead to more questions. And to me, that is the joy of research: it never quite ends –but I can share my findings while I continue the search for a more nuanced answer.
