When I was an undergraduate, my teacher of Sanskrit told us we'd forget all the grammar and vocab he painfully taught us in the 30hr intro course, but we would remember the stories he shared many years hence. I'm not sure it's true –but the stories' principles stayed with me (as did the word for horse, against the odds.)
Stories are one of the best ways to make sure the audience remembers the message, and as a historian and a teacher, I have learned to extract the stories from on "dry data" like population records, abbreviated court chronicles in telegram style, and descriptions of central government organisation to bring the past to life and to tease out transformations that began and levelled empires.
